Prayer Shawl Ministry

Prayerful Hearts, Flying Fingers

Shawls are knitted or crocheted with prayer, blessings, and good wishes in mind for the recipient; simple garments to warm the body and carry comfort and companionship to the soul. A completed shawl is an expression of our love and concern and of the loving care of God who works through us.

The shawl knitting ministry was created in 1998 by Victoria Cole-Galo and Janet Bristow, graduates of the Women’s Leadership Institute of Hartford Seminary and initiated here at Almonesson United Methodist Church in 2006. Today people all over the world are knitting and wearing shawls made and given in the true spirit of love and compassion.

Men and women, youth and adults are invited to become a part of this ministry. We even teach those who are new to the art. The patterns are simple three-stitch  patterns symbolic of the Holy Trinity, the Holy Family, the three stages of life. Completed shawls are prayed over by individuals and by the group and are dedicated by the Pastor and congregation before presentation to the recipient. Shawls are created for persons in pain or sorrow or grief as well as in celebration of life’s happy milestones and the blessings of God.

Our group gathers in prayer and fellowship at 7:30 p.m. on the first Monday of each month. All are welcome to come and join us as are names for recipients and gifts of yarn or unneeded crochet or knitting needles.
